You have just been hired by Me, Myself and I, Inc. an insurance call center for several major insurance companies.  Due to recent changes in reporting and compliance requirements, the company has to make major changes to their entire infrastructure to bring it up to date.  The current company has the following:

  • 20 people in the Finance Department

  • 20 people in the Operations Department

  • 8 people in the Sales Department

  • 8 people in Management

  • 200 users on the Call Floor

  • The System Administrators are part of the Operations Department

  • All IP addresses are based on from 192.168.x.x address space, the router preforming NAT and the firewall has a basic rule set.  The switches do not have VLANs, nor is there any sort of network segregation.  All software is based off a Windows Infrastructure.  The AD server is Windows 2003 and the Database is SQL 2000 Datacenter, all client computers are Windows XP.  The Switches, Router and Firewall are Cisco.  The switches are Cisco 1900 series, the router is a Cisco 2811 and the firewall is a Cisco PIX 501.  A diagram of the network is here

  • The branch office, located in a separate building, has the following:

    • 20 people in the Operations Department

    • 8 people in the Sales Department

    • 8 people in Management

    • 150 users on the Call Floor

You, as the newly minted Network Engineer, have been tasked to create a proposal allow for the update of the infrastructure to include cables, switches, routers and firewalls.  This will include preparing the network for additional servers and other components (to be installed later using near state of the art equipment), segregating the various departments and changing the IP addressing scheme.

As the network upgrades continue, management has decided that they will install a Voice over IP (VoIP) phone system and connect a branch office in addition to the upgrades. As part of your deliverable, you will diagram the proposed network and draft a report giving your thoughts on each of the proposed changes. The VoIP system include three Call Manager Servers (includes a redundant server) and enough phones for every user. Management does not want to use the phones as a switch so each phone will require a network jack. Management wants to reduce Licensing costs by removing the email servers and AD servers from the branch office and utilize the capabilities in the main office.

As the network upgrades continue, management has decided that they will install a new Intrusion Detection/Intrusion Prevention system (IDS/IPS) and upgrade the Firewalls in both the main and branch offices. In addition, Management wants to install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) between the main office and branch office. Further security measures management would like to include VLANs, trunking and network segregation. As part of your deliverable, you will diagram the proposed network and draft a report giving your thoughts on each of the proposed changes.
